According to the source who told the reporter.today,  a 17 year-old minor from Sebokeng suspected of killing a General Smuts High School learner in Vereeniging was arrested on Monday, 19 September 2022.

Mokete Isaac Malebo was allegedly stabbed to death while trying to break a physical altercation that had erupted near General Smuts High School. The deceased succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead by paramedics at Mediclinic.

Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirmed that an arrest was made and that a case has been opened. He said, “We can confirm that we are investigating a case of murder and that the suspect has been arrested. A murder weapon was also found on the scene.”

The Gauteng Education Department has also confirmed the incident and said it has despatched it’s psychosocial team to the school. “The department said they confirm that there was a sad incident that occurred In Sedibeng area which involves two learners, one from General Smuts in Vereeniging and the other one from Thuto-Tiro high school in Sebokeng. We understand that the learner from Thuto-Tiro stabbed the one from General Smuts and he passed away,” said Gauteng Education Spokesperson Steve Mabona.

He furthermore said, “We wish to convey our condolences to the family and the schooling community. We have despatched our psychosocial team to visit the school to provide necessary support. We really want to say to learners that there are better ways to resolve any issue that might be happening. You need to report the case to the relevant authorities so that they can then assist with the process of intervening in the event of anything,” added Mabona.
