A 27- year old police officer has been arrested on Friday the 4th at about 7pm. Apparently the officer hit a cyclist while driving under the influence of alcohol while driving a marked SAPS car.
IPID- spokesperson G Langa said, the motorist was driving on the R59 towards Vanderbijlpark when he noticed a SAPS car been driven recklessly across the road.
He further mentioned that” He then followed the car to the traffic lights. He tried to asked the police officer to give him car keys so that he can drive him to the nearest police station as he could see that the officer was drunk. But the officer refused to give him car keys and proceeded to drive passing red traffic lights without stopping. As he was driving he hit an unknown cyclist (male), who was riding a bicycle and the officer did not stop. Immediately the motorist reported the incident to the police.
He was later arrested for drunk and driving a case of culpable homicide was opened against the officer.
