Business owners and residents woke up to sad news on Sunday 13 June as there was no electricity around the CBD of Vereeniging and other parts of town.
Some had to close businesses and some had to use generators to keep their business open. Cable theft has been happening frequently in Vereeniging and surrounding suburbs recently, says the residents.
Yina electrical contractor was hired to replace the stolen cable. Site supervisor Mr Bheki Malia told The Reporter that the cable that was stolen was about 12.5 meters long.
One of the security officers Mrs Lebohang Mosia who is working for security company that is guarding inside the premises of DS sub – station next to where the crime took place, mentioned that the officer who was working the night shift on Saturday evening on the 12th June only realised that the cable was stolen in the morning during their area patrol. She furthermore expressed her concerns that they constantly are working in fear of being victims of these vicious criminals.
As at publishing this article it was not known whether a case was registered at the local police station.
