Taxi owners and drivers are complaining and protesting for a taxi rank that has been half-constructed for more than 5 years and is still not completed. Eric Tyantini who is a taxi owner told The Reporter that they have decided to protest on a normal working day so that their cry can be heard.
Taxi driver’s said that the commuters or people are suffering from the hot sun while queuing for a taxi to take them home. It gets worse when it is raining because there is no shelter for them to hide, instead they run to the shops to hide.
Our government keeps on making empty promises to renovate Vereeniging taxi rank and yet nothing is been done. The weeds are growing so big in it, and the commuters are always in danger of the thieves who robs them when it’s at night because the temporal rank is not near.

Taxi drivers say that Doctors, Lawyers, Nurses and Teachers who don’t have cars use taxis to get to work. “The main problems we facing in the whole of the Vaal is serious potholes and well-built taxi ranks. The temporal taxi rank we have been placed on belongs to Transnet and they now want their land back” said Eric Tyantini.
The new tires don’t last for even 6 months because of potholes in the rank and on the roads. The construction has stopped and we suspect corruption. We having our peaceful march then the police force is harassing us with rubber bullets.
The Morning Star taxi association is calling on President Ramaphosa to come down and address them on the way forward for Vereeniging taxi rank that has been on construction for more than 5 years. A lot of people were arrested on that march, some were shot by the police and they even broke some of the taxi windows. We want closure, not harassment.
