March 15, 1892: Jesse W. Reno patents first escalator.
The first escalator was patented by Reno, an inventor from New York City, on this day. In 1896, Reno brought his creation, called the “inclined elevator,” to the Old Iron Pier at Coney Island in New York. Reno’s invention angled at 25-degrees and used a conveyor belt.
