The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in Vanderbijlpark on 9th June Thursday, suspended classes and chased away students out of residence after students allegedly setting a building at the institution on fire during a protest over not receiving their allowances.

The university notified students who occupy the institution’s residence to vacate by 5pm latest on Thursday. The students were chased out and left stranded with nowhere to go.

The university has since allowed the students back to residence overnight and students were expected to vacate the premises again on Friday, 10 June at 10am.

The university spokesperson said that it has launched an investigation about the whole predicament, the suspects will hopefully be found, and they will face disciplinary action.
