Employees downed tools to embark on a protest demanding an increase of percent. It has been a week since the protest began. They are seeking a minimum of 8% increase. Local companies in Vereeniging complain that they are not generating profits in their production due to these protests.

Companies whose employees are involved in these protests are some of the engineering companies. In fact, they are part of the national union of mineworkers’ strikers based in the Vaal.

The employee of one of the companies who asked not to be named told the Reporter that the union said the companies are willing to offer 4.4% which they refused to except.

He concluded the interview by saying they were going to protest until they get 8% and are not willing to settle for less than that.
